1. Get the 7 basic dress shoe categories in basic colors (blue or black, maybe brown).
2. Buy shoes that are comfortable and that fit well. Theoretically, you should be able to play basketball (albeit briefly) in each one, including the high heels.
3. After you have the basics covered, branch out in colors and styles.
4. If you find a pair of shoes that are perfect (styling, comfort), consider getting the same shoe in several colors. This sounds silly, but can be practical.
5. If buying high heels, find ones that are comfortable. Yes, they exist. And if you buy only comfortable shoes, you will spread good shoe karma by weeding out uncomfortable shoes.
6. If you wear a particular shoe often (like a work shoe), consider getting several pairs of the exact same shoe.
